Choose a beautiful smile with our complete denture care services

Teeth form an important part of your overall appearance. False teeth can, therefore, be seen as a major change in how a person is viewed. Lassus Tandartsen has specialized in the development of dentures and complete denture care for quite some time. Our certified personnel will ensure that you receive high-quality prosthetic teeth designed to have a natural and impressive appearance.

Our Complete Denture Care Process

The Treatment

First appointment: Take an impression

At the first appointment, a preliminary impression is taken of your mouth using a stock tray that is filled with alginate, a sort of liquid rubber. The preliminary impression is sent to our dental laboratory where it is filled with gypsum. A preliminary cast and a custom tray are created that will be used for a precise impression that is required for your dentures.

Second appointment: prosthesis design

At the second appointment, the custom tray is used to make the individual impression from which the dentures will be made. This way we can be sure that the edges and boundaries of the dentures won’t cause problems. The custom tray contains a hard layer that will record the muscle attachments. With a liquid silicon material, we’ll use the custom tray to make the precise and definitive impression. The most used mouth movements will be simulated so that we’ll know which final design your prosthesis will require.

Third Appointment: Measurements, sizing and bite determination

The third appointment focuses on measurement and bite determination. With help from the new impression model, the positions and sizes of the teeth are measured. We also register the distance and position between the lower and upper jaw and can decide where your teeth will be placed. This appointment can also be used to discuss the shape and color of the teeth that will be used in the dentures.

Fourth and fifth appointment: Fitting and testing the prosthesis and placing the definitive prosthesis

By the fourth appointment, the dentures are almost ready. The purpose of the fourth appointment is to test the prosthesis to make sure that it fits properly and that the aesthetics meet your expectations based on the choices you made during the third appointment. If any adjustments are required these will be sent to the dental lab technician who will take these into account and will make your new dentures with the help of artificial materials. By the fifth appointment, you’ll receive your new definitive and final prosthesis to take home.

FAQ

Will my prosthetic teeth look like my old ones?

Due to the fact that our dentists take a jaw impression before any extractions occur, your dentures will look like your old teeth. If you’re not satisfied with the status, color or form of your original teeth, then it’s possible to discuss this with our dentists. They’ll take this into account as much as possible when developing your dentures.

Must all my remaining teeth be extracted before the placing of dentures?

For a mouth prosthesis, it’s not always necessary to extract all teeth. If you still have lots of healthy teeth, you can opt for a combined prosthesis.  With a complete prosthesis, over the lower and upper jaw, all remaining teeth need to be extracted. The Dentist extracts first the molars and then some weeks later the remaining teeth. During this period, you should only eat soft and liquidized food. The extraction of the teeth and molars is usually painless due to it being carried out under local anaesthetic.

Is it painful wearing dentures?

During the first week, you’ll have to get used to your new dentures. The first few days wearing them can feel somewhat painful. The space between your jaw and the dentures is initially quite small. If this results in painful pressure points then we’ll make sure that this will be corrected. To do so simply contact our practice in Tilburg for an appointment.

Lassus Tandartsen advises clients to make as much use as possible of the dentures. This way possible painful areas can be detected as soon as possible and corrected. As dentures are carefully and exactly developed to match the shape of your mouth, it’s important that you don’t make any changes to them yourself.

Will the way I speak be affected by dentures?

During the first days after the placing of the dentures speaking may feel somewhat uncomfortable. This is because your jaws have to adjust to the form of the dentures. After a week you should notice that speaking and articulation steadily improves. After some time you’ll be completely used to your new teeth and speaking and eating will no longer be a problem at all.

What do I do if my dentures become loose?

The most common reason for dentures no longer fitting properly is a process called bone resorption, where the gums begin to shrink due to them no longer needing to hold your teeth in place. As your dentures can’t shrink in line with your gums, this can lead to them becoming loose. That can become painful as in certain places more pressure is applied than before. The specialists at Lassus Tandartsen can, in this case, fit a special layer that will ensure that the dentures sit comfortably again and are no longer loose.

Can dentures be repaired if damaged?

Dentures are extremely vulnerable objects. Teeth can break off and it’s also possible that your dentures can break or rip. Therefore, we advise you to always be very careful with your dentures, particularly during the cleaning process. Leave for example a hand towel in the wash basin, or run a small layer of water before you begin cleaning. This way you can avoid damaging your dentures if they accidentally fall into the wash basin.

How do I keep my dentures and mouth clean?

Your dentures are not immune to bacteria, plaque, and stains. For that reason, you should rinse your mouth out well and clean your dentures with a hard brush, after every meal as well as after coffee, tea, cigarettes, and wine. Avoid the use of aggressive cleaning products such as toothpaste, bleach, and effervescent tablets, these can be damaging for your dentures. In addition to this, we strongly advise you not to use warm or hot water to clean your dentures. It is possible to use soap or a special liquefied cleaning material for your dentures. At night you should remove your dentures and place them in a container of cold water. For good results, you can use cleaning vinegar. Use a soft bristled brush to clean your jaws, tongue, and mouth. This can prevent infections. For this, you can use lukewarm water or toothpaste.

Endodontology Tilburg

“Endo” is the Greek word for “inside” and “odont” is Greek for “tooth.” Endodontic treatment treats the inside of the tooth.

Endodontics is a specialized area of dentistry that focuses on treating disease or injury to the dental pulp, this is also known as root canal treatment.

Inside every tooth and molar under the white enamel is a hard layer called dentin. Inside this is a soft tissue called the pulp. The pulp is living tissue and is made up of blood vessels and nerves.

These can cause problems for a tooth or a molar, but also the jawbone. The making of a diagnosis, the prevention, and treatment of these problems is known as endodontology. If the pulp becomes inflamed or infected, this can lead to considerable pain or even an abscess. The root canals and the root end openings are connected with the jawbone. Due to this an infection of the dental pulp can spread further to this area. If the dental pulp is infected then you need to undergo root canal treatment.

Root Canal Treatment at Lassus Tandartsen

Root canal treatment is an extremely complex procedure. At Lassuss Tandartsen we have considerable experience in carrying out root canal treatments.  For the more specialist procedures, you’ll be referred internally to our Dental Endodontists Sander Menso and Sune Demant. Sander Menso (NVVE qualified) works at both our Keizersgracht and Stadionplein location and Sune Demant at Lassusstraat. After studying and qualifying as Dentists, they completed an additional three years of study beyond dental school and are officially certified as Dentist-Endodontists.

Symptoms

The symptoms that your dental pulp is infected are often very clear:

  • Severe pain by the drinking of hot or cold drinks
  • Spontaneous pain which keeps you awake at night
  • Pain when chewing food

It’s good to be aware that not every dental pulp infection causes pain. Sometimes there are no symptoms and an infection is only discovered when an x-ray is made of your teeth or after clinical testing.

Root canal treatment

The process of root canal treatment is carried out as follows:

  1. 1. The dentist makes an x-ray of the root canals to determine the location of the infection.
  2. 2. Local anesthetic is administered and the dentist/endodontist makes an opening in the crown of the tooth.
  3. 3. The dentist removes the infected or dead tissue.
  4. 4. Very small instruments are used to clean the inside of the tooth or molar along with a disinfecting liquid.
  5. 5. The space that was created in the tooth or molar in the root canals are filled with a biocompatible rubber like material and is completed with a normal filling. If the tooth is seriously weakened a crown can be used in place of a regular filling.

The treatment is virtually painless due to the use of local anesthetic. It’s possible that after the treatment that you’ll experience some pain. If that’s the case we recommend the use of paracetamol or ibuprofen.

Further Treatment

In some exceptional cases, it can be possible that after root canal treatment that the infection is not completely cured or that you experience a repeat of the complaints. In most cases with additional root canal treatment, you can keep your tooth or molar.  In the new treatment, all root canals will be cleaned and filled again. During the treatment, the dentist will make an x-ray in order to manage the course of the treatment.

Is root canal treatment pain-free?

Due to the use of local anesthetic the treatment is virtually painless. It’s possible that after the treatment that you’ll experience some pain. If that’s the case we recommend the use of paracetamol or ibuprofen. If the pain continues for a longer period, please contact your dentist.

How long does a root canal treatment take?

The duration of a root canal treatment depends on the number of root canals. Not every tooth has the same number of canals. A normal tooth often has 1 canal, molars often have multiple canals. The treatment can vary from half an hour to two hours.

How does the tooth look after root canal treatment?

In the past, teeth that had undergone root canal treatment would look a little darker than the rest. Due to modern day techniques, this rarely occurs nowadays.  If a small discoloring occurs, this can be easily resolved. There are a number of possibilities available to restore your teeth to a natural color.

If I don′t have root canal treatment what happens then?

If the dental pulp is infected and not treated then it will not be cured. The only alternative to root canal treatment is the removal of the tooth or molar that’s infected. In some cases that’s the best solution. It’s always better to keep your natural teeth, therefore we advise to always have root canal treatment if it’s required.

A quicker and more effective way to implement tooth implants

In the event that you require your natural teeth to be replaced with tooth implants. Lassus Tandartsen has in-house expertise in all technical developments and innovations in the area of Implantology in-house. This ensures that implants can be placed in a timely and cost-effective manner.

Why have tooth implants at Lassus Tandartsen Tilburg?

Tooth Implants The treatment

Below is a short overview of the steps involved in placing implants:

  • A consultation and assessment of your health
  • Diagnosis through the use of a CBCT scan
  • Placing of the implant(s)
  • After 7-10 days removal of stitches and review of the status of the recovery process
  • After 8-12 weeks the placing of a crown, prosthesis or bridge

Which Tooth Implants Are Best For Me?

At Lassus Tandartsen we work with titanium and zirconium implants.

Titanium

Titanium implants are a type of screw-like artificial root that is placed in the jawbone. Rejection of this type of implant is extremely rare unless the client is allergic to metals. It’s also very long-lasting with a lifelong guarantee.

Zirconium

Zirconia is an incredibly strong, solid all-ceramic material widely used to create crowns and bridges. The use of Zirconia for tooth implants is a holistic option. Cosmetically, it’s a better solution than titanium due to its natural white appearance. It’s particularly suitable for replacing front teeth.

Consultation

You’re welcome for a consultation with an implantologist to discuss the options and possibilities for implants. During the consultation, we’ll make an assessment of your health. Your overall health, use of medication, allergies and any medical issues or complications by earlier dental treatment will be discussed.

Diagnosis

In order to make a good diagnosis, in most cases, we use a CBCT scan. This provides the implantologist with a three-dimensional image of the teeth from which they can determine if an implant is the best solution. The implantologist pays particular attention to the quantity and quality of the jawbone present in the scan.

The placing of implants

Implants are placed under local anaesthetic. After this, a temporary healing cap is applied to the implant. After 7 to 10 days you’ll return to the practice to have the stitches removed. The implantologist will also investigate the status of the healing process.

The overall healing process takes roughly 8 to 12 weeks. It’s dependent on the quality and amount of jawbone and the individual medical situation. During this period it’s important to clean your teeth well.

The Application of a crown, prosthesis or bridge

Once your gums heal, you’ll have more impressions made of your mouth and remaining teeth so that the definitive crown, prosthesis or bridge can be made and placed in your mouth.

Regular checkups and aftercare are necessary in order to be able to maintain the optimal condition of your gums and crown. This way you can ensure that your implants will have a longer usage period.

Have beautiful white teeth once more

A lot of people view their teeth as an essential part of their appearance. This is also one of the reasons why people want to go through life with beautiful teeth. Teeth are confronted on a daily basis with our personal habits (eating, drinking, and smoking), where as a result of this teeth can over time slowly become stained and develop a lacklustre color.

The discolouration of teeth can cause embarrassment, this is one of the reasons that more and more people are opting for teeth whitening. Lassus Tandartsen, with three practices in Amsterdam, and a new location in Tilburg has the in-house expertise to quickly and effectively whiten your teeth in a sustainable manner.

Teeth Whitening

Prior to the teeth whitening treatment, your teeth will be extensively cleaned to ensure the best results possible. Because we can guarantee a much better result in comparison with in-office whitening, we only offer at home whitening treatments. In order to do this, we’ll make two appointments with you. During the first appointment, imprints will be made of your mouth, after which a dental technician will create special bleaching trays for the upper and lower jaws. These will be available for you to collect from the practice after a week. A special syringe is used to apply bleaching gel to the trays for four to ten nights. At our practices in the Keizersgracht or the Lassusstraat, you’ll receive detailed instructions for teeth bleaching at home. Doing so at home is an effective and safe way to whiten your teeth.

During The Treatment

Following the treatment, we advise our clients to temporarily avoid the consumption of any food or drink that contains colouring. This is to prevent any negative impact on the results of the teeth whitening process. The final results of the treatment are usually clearly visible after approximately two weeks.

Teeth whitening at Lassus Tandartsen

Thanks to a team of experienced English speaking dentists at our practice in Tilburg we can help you achieve your goal of having beautiful whiter teeth.

Crown and bridge work

There are times when your teeth need to be restored. For example, in the Netherlands, it’s not unusual that while cycling or using a scooter that accidents occur whereby people end up with broken teeth or end up losing a tooth completely. It’s often not possible to place a filling or facings in such cases. A porcelain crown is then the solution for this. A porcelain crown is indistinguishable from real teeth and has a natural color.

Straight and gleaming teeth through the use of dental braces

Teeth form an important part of your appearance. Gleaming and straight teeth provide you with more self-confidence and a nice smile. Our dentists for Orthodontics focus on the correction of teeth that are too far forward or crooked. They can also make corrections when there’s not enough room in the jaw, or if the teeth and molars don’t fit well together, braces can be a good solution for such problems.

Dental Braces for Adults and Children Tilburg

In our modern dental practices, you can make an appointment to see our dental orthodontists in Tilburg. Lassus Tandartsen is the ideal choice for all your dental needs and offers some of the following advantages:

  • A tailor-made treatment plan
  • Personal attention
  • Long opening times (including evenings and weekends)
  • We treat children as well as adults

Why dental braces?

A lot of people opt for dental braces as they would like to have a nice smile with even straight teeth. However, for health reasons, it can also be important to use braces. A jaw with straight teeth ensures that you can bite well, chew, speak and smile. Some teeth’ positions can lead to damage of the gums, asymmetry in the face and deformed jaws. It can also be necessary for your health and in some cases important to wear braces.

The treatment

Below follows a short roadmap for braces treatment.

  • Intake and discussion of the individual treatment plan
  • Investigation (Xrays, mouth examination, and creation of jaw and teeth models)
  • Placing of the braces
  • Check-ups (every 4 to 8 weeks) during the treatment period

As every mouth is unique, every client receives a custom-made treatment plan.

Intake

The purpose of the intake appointment is to give you the chance to ask questions about the possibilities. At the end of the appointment, you’ll receive a personalized treatment plan and a quotation for the cost of the orthodontic treatment you require.

Treatment plan for dental braces

During the investigation, which can also be carried out at the intake meeting, an orthopantomogram, a panoramic scanning of the upper and lower jawbone, RSP, study models and clinical photos will be made. This will be carried out by one of our dentists for orthodontics in one of our modern facilities in Tilburg.

Investigation

During the investigation, which can also be carried out at the intake meeting, an orthopantomogram, a panoramic scanning of the upper and lower jawbone, RSP, study models and clinical photos will be made. This will be carried out by one of our dentists for orthodontics in one of our modern facilities in Amsterdam.

Placing of braces

There are different kinds of aberrations which require specific braces. Each type of brace is placed differently. Below is an overview of the different kinds of braces:

  • Invisible braces (Invisalign)
  • Metal braces
  • Twin-block braces
  • Plate braces (it’s against the palate)
  • headgear braces

The most common form of braces are metal ones. Placed on the front of teeth and molars these are the type that most people associate with braces. Metal braces are a combination of brackets, archwires and ligature elastics. The brackets are attached to the teeth using special glue. A thin metal wire called an archwire is used to connect each bracket and ensure that each tooth or molar is guided correctly in place. Ligature elastics hold the archwire to the brackets.

Checkups

After the placing of your braces, you will need to attend a check-up roughly once a month with a dentist for orthodontics in Tilburg. The purpose of the check-ups is to replace worn-out elastics, check on your teeth’s progress, and adjust the wires attached to the brackets to make sure that your teeth are being pulled in the right direction.

Retention Phase

Once the dentist for Orthodontics decides that the treatment is complete, your braces will be removed. After that, the retention phase begins. It’s possible that your teeth might still move after the braces treatment. To ensure that the results achieved remain, we place a retention brace. This prevents your teeth from returning to the position they were in prior to the treatment. Retention braces come in numerous sorts and sizes. There are both fixed and removable retention braces. The dentist for orthodontics will decide which retention braces are necessary for you.

The dental braces treatment is not covered by the standard mandatory health insurance in the Netherlands. In very special cases health insurers will reimburse the costs, but this is mostly in the case of congenital facial defects or serious aberrations in the conditions of teeth and jaws.

If you have supplementary dental insurance, then treatment for braces is reimbursed in most cases. We advise you to contact your health insurer and discuss the treatment plan we’ll provide you with. This way you’ll be fully aware of any costs that you may incur directly that won’t be covered by your health insurer.

Child-Friendly Dentists in Tilburg

Lassus Tandartsen is a dental practice that focuses on the entire family. Children are therefore very welcome at all of our practices. Most cavities emerge between the age of 4 and 21 years old. As a result of this, we focus extra time and attention on this age group.

The first visit to our child-friendly dentists in Tilburg

We’re of the opinion that children are never too young for their first visit to the dentist. We recommend bringing your children with you to see one of our child-friendly dentists from the age of two years old. The first visit with your child is an introduction where they can get used to the dental practice environment and the dentist. As your child sees that you’re not afraid of visiting the dentists, this will make them feel comfortable a lot quicker. If your child is clearly at ease with us, then we’ll invite them to sit in the dental chair. It’s also possible that the dentist will look in your child’s mouth for the first time to count the number of teeth and molars.

Checkups

As soon as your child is used to the dentist, then checkups can take place. During the checkup, we’ll investigate the general health of the teeth of your child and will count the number of teeth and molars. Afterwards, we’ll provide tips for cleaning and nutrition advice. The checkups of your child take place during your own periodic dental appointments.

Cavity treatment by children friendly dentists

In the event that during a checkup the dentist sees that there are cavities in any of the teeth of your son or daughter, then they’ll handle this carefully and thoughtfully. The dentist will take the time to discuss this in a playful manner with your child. We’ll be open and honest and will communicate with your child in an understandable manner.

Child teeth development

Children start losing baby teeth roughly around the age of 5 or 6 years old. Permanent (or adult) molars, emerge behind your child’s existing teeth. The emergence of the first permanent molars often goes unnoticed, as these appear in the back of the mouth and do not lead to the loss of milk teeth.

The exchange of the rest of the teeth and molars will not go unnoticed. Premolars, canines, and incisors will erupt into the gaps left by primary teeth that have fallen out. This process is usually completed by the age of 13. After this, at around the age of 14 2 large molars will erupt, and it’s also possible that between the ages of 18 to 24 the third set of molars (wisdom teeth) can erupt.

Prevention

In order to keep your child’s teeth healthy, prevention and good dental hygiene are important. Teeth brushing and healthy nutritional habits play an important role in this. At our dental practice we provide the following preventative treatments:

Dental Sealants

Most cavities appear at the moment that the molars have fully erupted. This is due to newly erupted molars often containing deep grooves. It’s easy for food particles and bacteria to sit within the grooves. Even good brushing of teeth is sometimes not enough, this is because the grooves are so narrow and deep that it’s not possible for a toothbrush to effectively remove everything.

To prevent cavities it’s possible for the dentist to seal the molars. During this treatment, the grooves are covered with a thin layer of synthetic resin or fluoride holding cement.

Fluoride

Fluoride makes teeth and molars stronger. For health reasons, fluoride can only be used in small concentrations. The Ivory Cross gives the following advice for the use of the fluoride by children:

0 to 1 years old

As the first tooth erupts: Clean once per day with children’s toothpaste that contains fluoride

2-4 years old

Clean twice a day with children’s toothpaste that contains fluoride

5 years and older

Clean twice a day with fluoride-based toothpaste for adults

In the event that your child has multiple cavities or dental caries, the dentist may advise additional fluoride use or a fluoride treatment.

Braces

Our dentist for orthodontics can correct children’s teeth that are too far forward or crooked by the placing of braces. For health reasons, it can be important for children to wear braces. A mouth with straight teeth makes it possible to bite, chew, talk and laugh well. The position of some teeth can lead to damage to the gums, dental asymmetry in the face and malformed jaws or an overbite. Read more about braces on this page.

Lassus Tandartsen is committed to providing exceptional dental services for all the family. We pride ourselves on having the most children friendly dentists in Amsterdam and now Tilburg too.

Prevent dental problems

Did you know that almost all dental problems can be prevented by the use of sufficient oral hygiene? In our modern, newly opened clinic at Ringbaan Oost, you can make an appointment with an English speaking dental hygienist. In order to proactively look after your teeth, we advise regular visits to our dental hygienists. A referral from a dentist isn’t required. Simply make an appointment.  Call 013 21 05 009

Preventative care

At Lassus Tandartsen we take a proactive approach to dental care. The prevention of problems with your teeth is one of the most important tasks of our team of dentists, dental hygienists and prevention assistants. Nearly all dental problems can be prevented with the help of good dental hygiene.

In order to prevent dental problems and keep your teeth as clean as possible, we advise that you have a twice-yearly combined appointment with a dentist and an oral hygienist. The Dentist will check if there are any problems with your teeth and the dental hygienist will clean your teeth and gums. After the cleaning, our dental hygienists will give advice on how you can best look after your teeth.

A big advantage of Lassus is that we offer every under one roof: Dental hygienists, orthodontists, and of course dentists.

When should I visit a dental hygienist?

When you have any of the following complaints it’s advisable to make an appointment with one of our dental hygienists:

  • Loose teeth or molars
  • Bleeding gums during teeth brushing
  • Swollen and red gums
  • Recurring problems with tartar
  • Bad breath
  • Receding Gums
  • Regular occurrences of cavities

The differences between a dental hygienist and prevention assistant

In our practices, you’ll meet dental hygienists as well as prevention assistants, but what is exactly are the differences between the two? A Dental hygienist holds an HBO degree and is continuously tested on the latest quality standards. A dental hygienist focuses on the prevention of things such as gum problems and cavities. Alongside this, the dental hygienist can also handle treatment of gums infections such as periodontitis and gingivitis.

Where the work of the dental hygienist begins, stops in principle the work of the prevention assistant. A prevention assistant gives advice over the prevention of cavities and gum diseases. Alongside this, the prevention assistant deals with the treatment of simple complaints.

The treatment

Before you undergo any treatment, a PPS measurement is performed. This works as follows; Our dental hygienists give your gums a score between 1 and 3. From the basis of these scores, we define your treatment plan.

PPS Description
1There are pockets up to 3 mm and the gums are sufficiently healthy. We strive to maintain this through instructions and treatments.
2With this score there are pockets up to 5 mm and the health of your gums is at a tipping point. There is probably already bone destruction. Additional oral hygiene treatments are necessary to reduce pockets. It is possible that additional research needs to be done immediately by determining the periodontium status and starting an intensive periodontal process.
3With PPS 3, pockets of 6 mm or deeper have been identified. There is also bone loss around one or more teeth. This usally makes it necessary to conduct more extensive research and start an intensive investigation process.

*Explanation of the terms gingivitis and periodontitis:
If as a result of dental plaque an infection exists on the edge of the gums, then it’s a case of gingivitis. If the infection spreads close to the jawbone, then the term for this is periodontitis.

Overview of treatment

The following treatments are carried out by our dental hygienists:

  • The Cleaning of root surfaces under the gums
  • Removal of tartar, plaque and infections
  • The placing of sealants
  • Polishing and fillings
  • The smoothing over of root surfaces
  • The placing of fluoride
  • Advice and explanations about cavities and gum problems

Reimbursement from your health insurance provider

The costs of dental hygiene treatment are not covered by the basic health insurance. In the event that you have additional insurance for dental treatment then in most cases, the costs are reimbursed. If in doubt, double-check the terms of your additional health insurance policy or contact your insurance provider.

The costs for children younger than 18 years old are covered by the basic insurance. For children younger than 18 years it’s not necessary to open an additional health insurance policy. Do the health insurance reimbursement check on our website.

Frequently asked questions

MAD (Mandibular advancement device)

A potential treatment for snoring or sleep apnea (OSA) is to wear a Mandibular Advancement Device. An MAD, also known as a snore guard, is a customised mouth guard that pushes your lower jaw forward slightly. Wearing it at night creates more space behind the tongue, which allows breathing without vibration. Reimbursement of costs for a MAD can be requested on the advice of an ENT specialist, pulmonologist or neurologist. This is only possible for individual MADs that are manufactured from dental imprints at dental laboratories.

  • A simple solution for snoring and sleep apnoea
  • A good night’s sleep for you and your partner
  • Your health insurer often covers costs
  • NVTS-accredited MAD specialist

What is sleep apnea?

Apnoea is derived from the Greek word ‘apnea’, meaning ‘without breath. This is literally what happens to clients who suffer from sleep apnea. The breath falters during sleep, which sometimes causes clients to stop breathing for a few seconds or even full minutes. These pauses in breathing can happen several times an hour.

What are the risks of snoring and sleep apnea?

Snoring is primarily perceived as bothersome. However, sleep apnea also has a considerable effect on your health. Sleep apnoea can lead to chronic sleep disorders, fatigue, headache and high blood pressure, amongst other things. In addition, obesity and diabetes often occur in combination with sleep apnea.

Take the sleep apnea test

High risk of OSA: 3 or more points.
Low risk of OSA: fewer than 3 points.

  1. 1. Do you snore loudly?
  2. 2. Do you often feel tired, fatigued, or sleepy during the day?
  3. 3. Has anyone noticed that you stop breathing during the night?
  4. 4. Are you being (or have you ever been) treated for high blood pressure?
  5. 5. Is your BMI (Body Mass Index) above 35?
  6. 6. Are you over the age of 50 years?
  7. 7. Is the circumference of your neck (collar size) above 40?
  8. 8. Are you male?

Schedule a consultation with our MAD dentist if you scored 3 or more points on the abovementioned questions. Our MAD dentist will arrange a referral to an ENT specialist for a sleep study.

The treatment process

Initial appointment. An oral examination takes place at the initial appointment, including X-rays and illuminated photographs. You discuss the reason for the referral and the sleep study results with the MAD specialist. If the condition of your teeth allows, imprints of your upper and lower jaws are made, and your bite is registered. This information is eventually used to manufacture the snore guard in the dental laboratory.

Fitting. The dental technician needs 3-4 weeks to manufacture the MAD. We then schedule a short appointment of around 20 minutes to fit the mouth guard. In addition, the MAD specialist gives you advice regarding any symptoms and instructions for maintenance.

Check-up. One week after having the MAD device fitted, you return for a check-up to evaluate the mouth guard’s effect and make any adjustments. You subsequently return for annual MAD check-ups.

Types of snore guards

  • OSA MAD
  • Adjustable snore guard
  • Non-adjustable snore guard

The type of snore guard that suits you depends on your general health and dental status.

Costs and reimbursement by your health insurer

The costs for all dental treatment are determined nationally by the Dutch Healthcare Authority on behalf of the government.

For full reimbursement of the cost of a MAD, it is important that your specialist is accredited by the NVTS or EADMS. You must submit a request to your health insurer before receiving the mouth guard. You also need a referral from an ENT specialist, pulmonologist or neurologist, as well as the results of the sleep study. Below is a summary of the procedures and costs involved in getting a MAD. Your MAD specialist will give you a personalised cost estimate at your initial appointment.

*There may be additional technical /material costs for these procedures.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best way to keep my snore guard clean? This depends on the kind of MAD. All kinds of mouthguards can be cleaned with Brite. It is very important that you do not use toothpaste. It contains a substance that is bad for your mouth guard.

I have dentures. Do I qualify for a snore guard? No, unfortunately, dentures offer insufficient anchorage. A MAD can only be worn if you have your own teeth or dental implants. You then qualify for OSA and receive a referral to an OMS surgeon for further treatment.

Does the snore guard come with a guarantee? Only the MAD has a 5-year guarantee. A snore guard comes with a 2-year guarantee. Exceptions to this are breakage caused by grinding, dropping, or bending. The guarantee on the MAD is also invalidated if the mouth guard no longer fits because of a change to your teeth or alterations made by third parties.

Could treatment with MAD cause complications? Wearing the MAD can cause a tendency to retch. This varies greatly from one person to another and is often temporary in nature. You may also suffer from excessive salivation, sensitive muscles and/or mandibular joints and temporary changes to your teeth. These complaints usually disappear an hour after removing the mouthguard.
