This means that nearly half of all individuals may have some form of apprehension about visiting the dentist.

You can visit one of the specialist dentists at Lassus Tandartsen Amsterdam for an initial consultation. The dentist will discuss with you what the options are, how long you have to wear the brace and what the costs are.

In this article you’ll read more about:

  • Examples of invisible braces
  • Costs
  • Intake & treatment
  • How Invisalign® works
  • Our dentists

What is Invisalign®?

Invisalign® treatment is one of the newest ways to straighten your teeth. Using digital 3D imaging technology, the dentist makes several invisible mouth guards (also called aligners) for orthodontics. You wear each aligner for about two weeks before it is replaced with the next invisible mouthguard. In this way, your teeth are pushed a little further towards the intended final position. The treatment duration and the number of mouth guards depend on your initial situation and the desired end result. The dentist can provide you an estimate of this in advance.

The advantages of invisible braces

  • Ensures that your teeth become straight again

  • Is easy to keep clean

The braces are removable and, as a result, easy to keep clean. You only have to rinse them under the tap and brush the difficult-to-reach places with your toothbrush.

  • They are very comfortable

Invisalign® gradually corrects the position of your teeth. So you don’t have that pulling feeling in the beginning that you get with regular braces. The brace will be a bit awkward at first, but you will get used to it after a few days.

  • Shows the result in advance

Thanks to unique 3D technology, you can see the end results in advance. We explain each step in the process so that you know precisely how your teeth will look with the different aligners.

In addition, with Invisalign® invisible braces, you can exercise worry-free, and you can continue to eat everything you want. The removable, invisible braces correct your teeth with minimal impact on your daily life.

The costs of Invisalign®

The final costs depend on the duration of the treatment. During an initial consultation with the dentist for orthodontics, it will become clear what the situation in your mouth is and how long you have to wear the brace. On this basis, a treatment plan will be drawn up and the final costs will become clear.

Reimbursement from health insurance

Health insurers view Invisalign® as a cosmetic choice and not as a medical necessity. Many insurers therefore do not offer reimbursement for invisible braces. If you have additional insurance for orthodontics, you may be reimbursed for the consultation costs. The technical costs of Invisalign® are almost always at your own expense. Unfortunately, these costs are the largest part of the final bill.

There are some insurers that will reimburse Invisalign® if there is a medical need for orthodontics. Talk to your health insurer about this. Please contact Lassus Tandartsen if you need more information for possible reimbursement.

Intake & treatment

The treatment process always starts with an intake interview with our dentist for orthodontics at Apollolaan 174 in Amsterdam.

1.      Intake interview

During the intake interview, the dentist for orthodontics will discuss your wishes and expectations with you. The situation in your mouth is then examined and the dentist determines how Invisalign® can help you get beautiful, straight teeth again.

2.      Treatment plan

Based on the information from the intake interview, a personal treatment plan is drawn up This plan states how often you must return for a check-up, how long you must wear the invisible brace and what the costs are for the entire process. Once you agree to the treatment plan, we will start.

In addition, Invisalign® will provide you with a simulation of the entire treatment process. You will then see exactly how your teeth will move to achieve beautiful teeth.

3.      Create invisible braces

The orthodontic dentist makes an impression of your teeth. This is done with an impression tray or with a modern mouth scanner. We make several custom brackets based on the impression. You will wear each brace for about two weeks before it is replaced by the next in the series. With every new brace you are one step closer to the desired end result.

4. Placement of the bracket

The dentist will contact you when the braces are ready. During a consultation in one of our dental practices, we will check if the brace fits properly. We will show you how to click the invisible braces in and out and how to clean the Invisalign®.

5.      Periodic checkups

You have an appointment every month for a periodic check-up. During the check-up we check whether progress is as expected and whether the treatment is proceeding without problems. The dentist may also need to change some pressure points in the Invisalign®.

6.      After treatment

After the treatment you will have beautiful, straight teeth. To ensure that this remains the case, we place a retainer behind your teeth that ensures that the teeth stay in place. The costs for the retainer are included in the price of the brace.

How Invisalign® works

Invisalign® is a virtually invisible way to straighten teeth. A series of invisible braces are made based on the current situation in your mouth and the desired result. Each subsequent brace in the series brings you one step closer to the desired end result. How many invisible braces are needed and how long your treatment lasts depends on your wishes and the condition of your teeth.

Invisalign® invisible braces move teeth through a series of precisely controlled movements. Invisalign® braces not only control the movement of the teeth, but also take timing into account. Only a few teeth can move at each stage. This method ensures that you experience less discomfort from Invisalign® braces than from regular braces.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Invisalign® treatment painful?

Some people experience a feeling of pressure when wearing the brace. This usually occurs when you use a new aligner. This is normal and a sign that the brace is doing its job. The oppressive feeling often goes away after a few days.

How long does a treatment take with Invisalign?

The duration of the treatment is comparable to that of normal braces. This means that it mainly depends on the initial situation and the desired end result. During a consultation, the orthodontic dentist can tell you more about how long you should wear the brace.

Can I eat and drink everything with an Invisalign brace?

Yes. Unlike traditional braces, Invisalign braces can easily be removed from the mouth to eat and drink. So there are no restrictions on what you can eat or drink.

How long should I wear the Invisalign brace each day?

Our advice is to wear the Invisalign brace for at least 22 hours a day. The longer you wear the brace, the faster the treatment.

Over time, dentures (also called prostheses) may no longer fit properly with the current shape and size of your jaw. Research has shown that your jaw gradually shrinks as you get older. As a result, your prosthesis often no longer provides support when eating or talking. Click dentures offer the solution to your problem. Lassus Tandartsen has the knowledge, experience and expertise to develop suitable click dentures for you from our practices in Amsterdam.

What are click dentures?

Click-on dentures can be seen as a prosthesis that is clicked onto implants. Hence the name click dentures. Depending on the current shape and size of your jaw, the click dentures are usually mounted on two or four implants.

The implants are installed by our implantologist under local anesthesia. This way you will not experience any pain during the treatment. Once the implants have been placed, the implantologist will click your new denture onto the previously placed implants, so that you can be sure that your click dentures have been fitted correctly. In addition, you also have the option to take your click dentures in and out at any time of the day.

Are you looking for an implantologist in the Amsterdam area?

The specialists at Lassus Tandartsen can provide you with suitable click dentures. Quality is central in all phases of the development of click dentures. Thanks to years of expertise and experience in this area of dentistry, you are assured of suitable and radiant click dentures.

Would you like more information about click dentures or about the treatment process? Then get in contact with us via the contact form below or call us on  020 47 13 137.

Review

“Compliments to this practice. A very nice practice with nice people who know what they are doing. You never have to wait long and time is taken for you. They know me by name, which I really like.”

Frequently asked questions

Do click dentures hurt?

We place the implants for the click dentures under local anesthesia. This means you will not feel more pain than with a regular dental procedure. After the treatment you may experience some swelling and/or pain. You can easily combat this with a cold pack and some standard painkillers such as paracetamol.

Can I eat everything with click dentures?

Of course. When the implants are properly bonded, you can eat, drink and laugh without worry. Click dentures feel like you have your own teeth again.

How do I clean click dentures?

You can remove the click dentures from your mouth to clean them. You use a special denture brush and special cleaning agent for this. Never use regular toothpaste when cleaning click dentures. This can cause damage to the prosthesis.

Will the cost of the click dentures be reimbursed by my health insurer?

The basic health insurance only reimburses click-on dentures if there is a toothless jaw that has shrunk to such an extent that a regular denture is no longer an option. If this is not the case, you can sometimes still get reimbursed for click dentures through additional dental insurance. The precise reimbursement varies per insurer and per package. So consult your policy carefully or contact your insurer.

Choose a beautiful smile

Teeth form an important part of your overall appearance. False teeth can, therefore, be seen as a major change in how a person is viewed. Lassus Tandartsen has specialized in the development of dentures for quite some time. Our certified personnel will ensure that you receive high-quality prosthetic teeth designed to have a natural and impressive appearance.

Dentures: The Treatment

First appointment: Take an impression

At the first appointment, a preliminary impression is taken of your mouth using a stock tray filled with alginate, a type of liquid rubber. The preliminary impression is sent to our dental laboratory, where it is filled with gypsum. A preliminary cast and a custom tray are created to be used for a precise impression required for your dentures.

Second appointment: prosthesis design

The custom tray is used at the second appointment to make the individual impression from which the dentures will be made. This way, we can be sure that the edges and boundaries of the dentures won’t cause problems. The custom tray contains a hard layer that will record the muscle attachments. We’ll use the custom tray with liquid silicone material to make a precise and definitive impression. The most used mouth movements will be stimulated, so we know which final design your prosthesis will require.

Third Appointment: Measurements, sizing and bite determination

The third appointment focuses on measurement and bite determination. With help from the new impression model, the positions and sizes of the teeth are measured. We also register the distance and position between the lower and upper jaw and can decide where your teeth will be placed. This appointment can also be used to discuss the shape and color of the teeth that will be used in the dentures.

Fourth and fifth appointment: Fitting and testing the prosthesis and placing the definitive prosthesis

By the fourth appointment, the dentures are almost ready. The purpose of the fourth appointment is to test the prosthesis to ensure that it fits correctly and that the aesthetics meet your expectations based on your choices during the third appointment. If any adjustments are required, these will be sent to the dental lab technician, who will take these into account and make your new dentures with the help of artificial materials. By the fifth appointment, you’ll receive your new definitive and final prosthesis to take home.

FAQ

Will my prosthetic teeth look like my old ones?

Due to the fact that our dentists take a jaw impression before any extractions occur, your dentures will look like your old teeth. If you’re not satisfied with the status, color or form of your original teeth, then it’s possible to discuss this with our dentists. They’ll take this into account as much as possible when developing your dentures.

Must all my remaining teeth be extracted before the placing of dentures?

For a mouth prosthesis, it’s not always necessary to extract all teeth. If you still have lots of healthy teeth, you can opt for a combined prosthesis.  With a complete prosthesis, over the lower and upper jaw, all remaining teeth need to be extracted. The Dentist extracts first the molars and then some weeks later the remaining teeth. During this period, you should only eat soft and liquidized food. The extraction of the teeth and molars is usually painless due to it being carried out under local anaesthetic.

Is it painful wearing dentures?

During the first week, you’ll have to get used to your new dentures. The first few days wearing them can feel somewhat painful. The space between your jaw and the dentures is initially quite small. If this results in painful pressure points then we’ll make sure that this will be corrected. To do so simply contact one of our practices in Amsterdam for an appointment.

Lassus Tandartsen advises clients to make as much use as possible of the dentures. This way possible painful areas can be detected as soon as possible and corrected. As dentures are carefully and exactly developed to match the shape of your mouth, it’s important that you don’t make any changes to them yourself.

Will the way I speak be affected by dentures?

During the first days after the placing of the dentures speaking may feel somewhat uncomfortable. This is because your jaws have to adjust to the form of the dentures. After a week you should notice that speaking and articulation steadily improves. After some time you’ll be completely used to your new teeth and speaking and eating will no longer be a problem at all.

What do I do if my dentures become loose?

The most common reason for dentures no longer fitting properly is a process called bone resorption, where the gums begin to shrink due to them no longer needing to hold your teeth in place. As your dentures can’t shrink in line with your gums, this can lead to them becoming loose. That can become painful as in certain places more pressure is applied than before. The specialists at Lassus Tandartsen can, in this case, fit a special layer that will ensure that the dentures sit comfortably again and are no longer loose.

Can dentures be repaired if damaged?

Dentures are extremely vulnerable objects. Teeth can break off and it’s also possible that your dentures can break or rip. Therefore, we advise you to always be very careful with your dentures, particularly during the cleaning process. Leave for example a hand towel in the wash basin, or run a small layer of water before you begin cleaning. This way you can avoid damaging your dentures if they accidentally fall into the wash basin.

How do I keep my dentures and mouth clean?

Your dentures are not immune to bacteria, plaque, and stains. For that reason, you should rinse your mouth out well and clean your dentures with a hard brush, after every meal as well as after coffee, tea, cigarettes, and wine. Avoid the use of aggressive cleaning products such as toothpaste, bleach, and effervescent tablets, these can be damaging for your dentures. In addition to this, we strongly advise you not to use warm or hot water to clean your dentures. It is possible to use soap or a special liquefied cleaning material for your dentures. At night you should remove your dentures and place them in a container of cold water. For good results, you can use cleaning vinegar. Use a soft bristled brush to clean your jaws, tongue, and mouth. This can prevent infections. For this, you can use lukewarm water or toothpaste.

Endodontology Amsterdam

“Endo” is the Greek word for “inside” and “odont” is Greek for “tooth.” Endodontic treatment treats the inside of the tooth.

Endodontics is a specialized area of dentistry that focuses on treating disease or injury to the dental pulp, also known as root canal treatment.

Inside every tooth and molar under the white enamel is a hard layer called dentin. Inside this is a soft tissue called the pulp. The pulp is living tissue and is made up of blood vessels and nerves.

These can cause problems for a tooth, molar, and jawbone. The making of a diagnosis, the prevention, and treatment of these problems is known as endodontology. If the pulp becomes inflamed or infected, this can lead to considerable pain or even an abscess. The root canals and the root end openings are connected with the jawbone. Due to this, an infection of the dental pulp can spread further to this area. If the dental pulp is infected, you must undergo root canal treatment.

Root Canal Treatment at Lassus Tandartsen

Root canal treatment is an extremely complex procedure. At Lassus Tandartsen we have considerable experience in carrying out root canal treatments.  For the more specialist procedures, you’ll be referred internally to our Dental Endodontists. After studying and qualifying as Dentists, they completed an additional three years of study beyond dental school and are officially certified as Dentist-Endodontists.

Symptoms

The symptoms that your dental pulp is infected are often very clear:

  • Severe pain when drinking hot or cold drinks
  • Spontaneous pain which keeps you awake at night
  • Pain when chewing food

It’s good to be aware that not every dental pulp infection causes pain. Sometimes there are no symptoms, and infection is only discovered when an x-ray is made of your teeth or after clinical testing.

Root canal treatment

The process of root canal treatment is carried out as follows:

  1. 1. The dentist makes an x-ray of the root canals to determine the location of the infection.
  2. 2. Local anaesthetic is administered, and the dentist/endodontist makes an opening in the tooth’s crown.
  3. 3. The dentist removes the infected or dead tissue.
  4. 4. Very small instruments are used to clean the inside of the tooth or molar, along with a disinfecting liquid.
  5. 5. The space created in the tooth or molar in the root canals is filled with a biocompatible rubber-like material and is completed with a normal filling. If the tooth is seriously weakened, a crown can be used instead of a regular filling.

The treatment is virtually painless due to the use of a local anaesthetic. It’s possible that after the treatment, you’ll experience some pain. If that’s the case, we recommend the use of paracetamol or ibuprofen.

Further Treatment

In some exceptional cases, it can be possible that the infection is not completely cured after root canal treatment or that you experience a repeat of the complaints. In most cases, you can keep your tooth or molar with additional root canal treatment.  All root canals will be cleaned and filled in the new treatment. During the treatment, the dentist will take an x-ray to manage the treatment’s course.

Is root canal treatment pain-free?

Due to the use of local anesthetic the treatment is virtually painless. It’s possible that after the treatment that you’ll experience some pain. If that’s the case we recommend the use of paracetamol or ibuprofen. If the pain continues for a longer period, please contact your dentist.

How long does a root canal treatment take?

The duration of a root canal treatment depends on the number of root canals. Not every tooth has the same number of canals. A normal tooth often has 1 canal, molars often have multiple canals. The treatment can vary from half an hour to two hours.

How does the tooth look after root canal treatment?

In the past, teeth that had undergone root canal treatment would look a little darker than the rest. Due to modern day techniques, this rarely occurs nowadays.  If a small discoloring occurs, this can be easily resolved. There are a number of possibilities available to restore your teeth to a natural color.

If I don′t have root canal treatment what happens then?

If the dental pulp is infected and not treated then it will not be cured. The only alternative to root canal treatment is the removal of the tooth or molar that’s infected. In some cases that’s the best solution. It’s always better to keep your natural teeth, therefore we advise to always have root canal treatment if it’s required.

A quicker and more effective way to place them

Lassus Tandartsen has in-house expertise in all technical developments and innovations in the area of Implantology in-house. This ensures that implants can be placed in a timely and cost-effective manner.

Why have tooth implants at Lassus Tandartsen?

  • Use of CBCT scan (three-dimensional scanning)
  • High-quality implants from Thommen Medical Straumann
  • Long opening hours (also evenings and weekends)
  • Personal treatment plan
  • NVOI  recognized implantologists

Tooth Implants The treatment

Below is a short overview of the steps involved in placing implants:

  • A consultation and assessment of your health
  • Diagnosis through the use of a CBCT scan
  • Placing of the implant(s)
  • After 7-10 days removal of stitches and review of the status of the recovery process
  • After 8-12 weeks, the placing of a crown, prosthesis or bridge

Consultation for tooth implants

You’re welcome for a consultation with an implantologist to discuss the options and possibilities for implants. During the consultation, we’ll make an assessment of your health. Your overall health, medication use, allergies, and any medical issues or complications from earlier dental treatment will be discussed.

Diagnosis

We use a CBCT scan in most cases to make a good diagnosis. This gives the implantologist a three-dimensional image of the teeth from which they can determine if an implant is the best solution. The implantologist pays particular attention to the quantity and quality of the jawbone in the scan.

The placing of tooth implants

Implants are placed under local anaesthetic. After this, a temporary healing cap is applied to the implant. After 7 to 10 days, you’ll return to the practice to have the stitches removed. The implantologist will also investigate the status of the healing process.

The overall healing process takes roughly 8 to 12 weeks. It’s dependent on the quality and amount of jawbone and the individual medical situation. During this period, it’s important to clean your teeth well.

The Application of a crown, prosthesis or bridge

Once your gums heal, you’ll have more impressions made of your mouth and remaining teeth so that the definitive crown, prosthesis or bridge can be made and placed in your mouth.

Regular checkups and aftercare are necessary to maintain the optimal condition of your gums and crown. This way, you can ensure that your implants will have a longer usage period.

During the first appointment, imprints will be made of your mouth, after which a dental technician will create special bleaching trays for the upper and lower jaws. These will be available for you to collect from the practice after a week. A special syringe is used to apply bleaching gel to the trays for four to ten nights. At our practices in the Keizersgracht or the Lassusstraat, you’ll receive detailed instructions for teeth bleaching at home. Doing so at home is an effective and safe way to whiten teeth.

During The Treatment

Following the treatment, we advise our clients to avoid consuming any food or drink containing colouring temporarily. This is to prevent any negative impact on the results of teeth whitening. The final results of the treatment are usually clearly visible after approximately two weeks.

Teeth whitening at Lassus Tandartsen

Lassus Tandartsen has three practices in Amsterdam: in the city centre on the Keizersgracht, in Amsterdam South on the Lassusstraat and near the Olympic Stadium at Stadionplein. Thanks to a team of experienced dentists, we can help you achieve your goal of having beautiful, whiter teeth.

FAQ

Crown and bridge work

There are times when your teeth need to be restored. For example, in Amsterdam, it’s not unusual that while cycling or using a scooter that accidents occur whereby people end up with broken teeth or end up losing a tooth completely. It’s often not possible to place a filling or facings in such cases. A porcelain crown is then the solution for this. A porcelain crown is indistinguishable from real teeth and has a natural color.

Straight and gleaming teeth through the use of braces

Teeth form an important part of your appearance. Gleaming and straight teeth provide you with more self-confidence and a nice smile. Our dentists for Orthodontics focus on correcting teeth that are too far forward or crooked. They can also make corrections when there’s not enough room in the jaw, or braces can be a good solution for such problems if the teeth and molars don’t fit well together.

Braces Amsterdam

In our modern dental practices, you can make an appointment to see our dental orthodontists in Amsterdam. Lassus Tandartsen is the ideal choice for all your dental needs and offers some of the following advantages:

  • Personal attention
  • Long opening times (including evenings and weekends)

Why braces?

A lot of people opt for braces as they would like to have a nice smile with even straight teeth. However, it can also be important to use braces for health reasons. A jaw with straight teeth ensures you can bite well, chew, speak and smile. Some teeth’ positions can damage the gums and cause facial asymmetry and deformed jaws. It can also be necessary for your health; sometimes, its important to wear braces.

The treatment

Below is a short roadmap for braces treatment.

  • Intake and discussion of the individual treatment plan
  • Investigation (Xrays, mouth examination, and creation of jaw and teeth models)
  • Placing of the braces
  • Check-ups (every 4 to 8 weeks) during the treatment period

As every mouth is unique, every client receives a custom-made treatment plan.

Intake

The purpose of the intake appointment is to give you the chance to ask questions about the possibilities. At the end of the appointment, you’ll receive a personalized treatment plan and a quotation for the cost of the orthodontic treatment you require.

Treatment plan

During the investigation, which can also be carried out at the intake meeting, an orthopantomogram, a panoramic scanning of the upper and lower jawbone, RSP, study models, and clinical photos will be made. This will be carried out by one of our dentists for orthodontics in one of our modern facilities in Amsterdam.

Investigation

During the investigation, which can also be carried out at the intake meeting, an orthopantomogram, a panoramic scanning of the upper and lower jawbone, RSP, study models, and clinical photos will be made. One of our dentists for orthodontics will do this in one of our modern facilities in Amsterdam.

Placing of braces

There are different kinds of aberrations which require specific braces. Each type of brace is placed differently. Below is an overview of the different kinds of braces:

  • Invisible braces (Invisalign)
  • Metal braces
  • Twin-block braces
  • Plate braces (it’s against the palate)
  • headgear braces

The most common form of braces are metal ones. Placed on the front of teeth and molars, these are the type that most people associate with braces. Metal braces are a combination of brackets, archwires and ligature elastics. The brackets are attached to the teeth using special glue. A thin metal wire called archwire connects each bracket and ensures that each tooth or molar is guided correctly in place. Ligature elastics hold the archwire to the brackets.

Check ups

After placing your braces, you will need to attend a check-up roughly once a month with a dentist for orthodontics in Amsterdam. The purpose of the check-ups is to replace worn-out elastics, check on your teeth’s progress, and adjust the wires attached to the brackets to ensure that your teeth are being pulled in the right direction.

Retention Phase

Once the dentist for Orthodontics decides that the treatment is complete, your braces will be removed. After that, the retention phase begins. It’s possible that your teeth might still move after the braces treatment. To ensure that the results achieved remain, we place a retention brace. This prevents your teeth from returning to their position before the treatment. Retention braces come in numerous sorts and sizes. There are both fixed and removable retention braces. The dentist for orthodontics will decide which retention braces are necessary for you.

FAQ

What causes crooked teeth and molars?

The form of teeth, molars and jaw bones are partly inherited. Also during the growth period, certain habits can change the form and the condition of teeth and molars. For example, thumb sucking or pressing the tongue against teeth on a regular basis.

Are braces painful?

After the placing of braces, you might find that your teeth will be a little sensitive for the first few days. We advise you to eat soft food if that’s the case. You may experience soreness of the cheeks and lips in the first week after the placing of your braces. You can use dental wax to cover parts of the braces that feel sharp. This will be given to you by the dentist orthodontist after the placing of the braces.

During the regular checkups, the dentist orthodontist may decide to adjust the braces, it could be that your teeth will feel sensitive for a few days after the adjustment.

Is it possible to eat everything with braces?

It’s best to avoid hard or sticky food. The braces can be damaged by hard food and it’s difficult to remove sticky substances from the brackets and wires.

Can I do sport when wearing braces?

With fixed braces, you can continue to do sport. If you have removable braces such as twin block braces we advise you to remove them before doing any kind of sport.

What should I do if a wire becomes loose?

There’s a chance that after some time that a wire might become loose. We ask you to contact us as soon as possible to plan an appointment. This will allow us to quickly resolve the problem and have the braces functioning optimally again.

Reimbursement from Health Insurers

The braces treatment is not covered by the standard mandatory health insurance in the Netherlands. In very special cases, health insurers will reimburse the costs, but this is mainly in the case of congenital facial defects or serious aberrations in the conditions of teeth and jaws.

If you have supplementary dental insurance, then treatment for braces is reimbursed in most cases. We advise you to contact your health insurer and discuss the treatment plan we’ll provide you. This way, you’ll be fully aware of any costs that you may incur directly that won’t be covered by your health insurer.

Family oriented Dentists

Lassus Tandartsen is a dental practice that focuses on the entire family. Children are, therefore, very welcome in our practice. Most cavities emerge between the ages of 4 and 21. As a result, we focus extra time and attention on this age group.

The first visit to a children friendly dentist

We believe that children are never too young for their first visit to the dentist. We recommend bringing your child with you to the dentist from the age of two years old. The first visit with your child is an introduction where they can get used to the dental practice environment and the dentist. Seeing that you’re not afraid of visiting the dentists will make your child feel comfortable a lot quicker. If your child is at ease with us, we’ll invite them to sit in the dental chair. It’s also possible that the dentist will look in your child’s mouth for the first time to count the number of teeth and molars.

Checkups

As soon as your child is used to the dentist, checkups can occur. During the checkup, we’ll investigate the general health of your child’s teeth and will count the number of teeth and molars. Afterwards, we’ll provide tips for cleaning and nutrition advice. The checkups of your child take place during your own periodic dental appointments.

Cavity treatment by children friendly dentists

If the dentist sees cavities in any of the teeth of your son or daughter during a checkup, they’ll handle this carefully and thoughtfully. The dentist will take the time to discuss this playfully with your child. We’ll be open, honest, and communicate with your child in an understandable manner.

Child teeth development

Children start losing baby teeth roughly around the age of 5 or 6 years old. Permanent (or adult) molars emerge behind your child’s existing teeth. The emergence of the first permanent molars often goes unnoticed, as these appear in the back of the mouth and do not lead to the loss of milk teeth.

The exchange of the rest of the teeth and molars will not go unnoticed. Premolars, canines, and incisors will erupt into the gaps left by primary teeth that have fallen out. This process is usually completed by the age of 13. After this, at around the age of 14, 2 large molars will erupt, and it’s also possible that between the ages of 18 to 24, the third set of molars (wisdom teeth) can erupt.

Prevention

Prevention and good dental hygiene are important to keep your child’s teeth healthy. Teeth brushing and healthy nutritional habits play an important role in this. At our dental practice, we provide the following preventative treatments:

Dental Sealants

Most cavities appear at the moment that the molars have fully erupted. This is due to newly erupted molars often containing deep grooves. It’s easy for food particles and bacteria to sit within the grooves. Even good brushing of teeth is sometimes not enough, this is because the grooves are so narrow and deep that it’s not possible for a toothbrush to remove everything effectively.

To prevent cavities, it’s possible for the dentist to seal the molars. The grooves are covered with a thin layer of synthetic resin or fluoride-holding cement during this treatment.

Fluoride

Fluoride makes teeth and molars stronger. For health reasons, fluoride can only be used in small concentrations. The Ivory Cross gives the following advice for the use of fluoride by children:

0 to 1 years old

As the first tooth erupts: Clean once per day with children’s toothpaste that contains fluoride

2-4 years old

Clean twice a day with children’s toothpaste that contains fluoride

5 years and older

Clean twice a day with fluoride-based toothpaste for adults

If your child has multiple cavities or dental caries, the dentist may advise additional fluoride use or a fluoride treatment.

Braces

Our dentist for orthodontics can correct children’s teeth that are too far forward or crooked by placing braces. For health reasons, it can be important for children to wear braces. A mouth with straight teeth makes it possible to bite, chew, talk and laugh well. The position of some teeth can lead to damage of the gums, dental asymmetry in the face and malformed jaws or an overbite. Read more about braces.

Lassus Tandartsen is committed to providing exceptional dental services for all the family. We pride ourselves on having the most children friendly dentists in Amsterdam.
