When repairing a cavity, an inlay can restore your tooth in a more durable manner than a traditional filling, while also mimicking a tooth’s natural shade. An inlay is typically made of ceramic, composite resin, or a combination of both.
With a CAD/CAM inlay, your doctor uses a 3D scanner to aid in designing the restoration. This technology makes it possible for your Doctor to complete your inlay in a single appointment.
During the first step, your doctor will remove the decayed portion of the tooth, leaving an area that will be replaced with the inlay.
Next, the prepared tooth is scanned, and creation of the inlay begins right in your doctor’s office while you wait.
When the inlay is ready, your doctor will make final adjustments and bond it into place. Since it has been expertly crafted using digital fabrication, it will generally last longer than a large filling.
Once completed, your tooth is free of decay and restored to its natural strength and function.

When a tooth has been compromised by decay, your doctor may choose to use a filling or a crown to repair it. There are some differences to consider when evaluating your options.
When repairing a small area of decay, a filling is a great option. A filling can be completed in a single appointment and is less expensive than a crown.
The cavity can be filled with a material called composite, which mimics the tooth’s natural shade and sheen. Once completed, the filling should stop the decay and keep the tooth healthy for a number of years.
Drawbacks of a filling can be a shorter comparative lifespan, and potential long term issues like recurring decay and cracking.
Placing a crown is best when a tooth has been weakened by extensive decay, injury, or deterioration of a large filling. A crown procedure involves reducing the surface area of the whole tooth to remove the decay, and then covering it entirely with a restoration made of ceramic or composite.
Crowns are more durable and last longer than a filling, and protect teeth from fracturing over time. While requiring a more involved procedure, a crown can also be completed in a single appointment when using digital scanning and onsite fabrication.
In the right circumstances, both a filling and a crown are excellent solutions for repairing decayed or damaged teeth. It is important that you consult with your doctor so that the right choice can be made based upon your unique needs.

The process of tooth decay starts with plaque and bacteria building up on the tooth structure, creating acid.
This acid begins to erode the hard protective coating on the tooth, also known as the enamel.
Once the acid breaks through the outside layer of the enamel, the decay spreads faster due to the softer nature of the underlying layer, called the dentin.
If the decay is allowed to expand through the dentin it can penetrate the interior of the root, requiring additional procedures to remove the infected tissue.
A range of external damage can result from this decay as well, such as cracking or fractures, and can result in losing the tooth entirely.
It is important to detect and address issues of tooth decay early in the process to prevent these consequences. Regular visits to your dentist, good oral hygiene, and a proactive attitude towards your dental health will help minimize this risk.

When a tooth is lost, whether to an injury or decay, if the empty space left behind is not occupied the structure of the mouth can begin to alter as a result. This can lead to progressive adverse effects that should be reviewed with your dentist.

To start, the immediate area where the tooth is lost suffers adverse changes in the bone and gum support, typically in the form of tissue loss.
These changes can spread to the neighboring teeth, resulting in loss of bone support and the teeth drifting into the vacated space.
Additionally, opposing tooth begins to move into the space in a process called over eruption- further jeopardizing the surrounding bone structure and teeth.

These movements can lead to issues with a patients bite, as the teeth gradually become mis-aligned.
As time passes the severity of damage to the mouth can escalate, as well as the measures needed to remedy it. Your dentist is the best resource to recommend a treatment plan to fit your unique situation.

When a tooth has become so extensively decayed or damaged that it cannot be saved, your dentist may recommend extracting it.

In a simple extraction, your tooth is removed without surgery. Your doctor applies slight pressure with a specially designed instrument to gently and gradually ease the tooth from the socket. Once the tooth has been removed, your doctor will clean the area so the healing process can begin. While you are healing, your doctor can fit you with a temporary tooth. When the area has sufficiently healed, your doctor will discuss treatment options to permanently replace the extracted tooth.

When repairing a cavity, an inlay can restore your tooth in a more durable manner than a traditional filling. An inlay is typically made of ceramic, composite resin, metal, or gold.

At the first appointment, your doctor will take an impression (or mold) to help make a temporary inlay for your tooth. Next your tooth is prepared by removing the decayed portion, leaving an area that will be replaced with the inlay.
Your doctor will take another impression of the prepared tooth, and put in a temporary inlay while the final restoration is being fabricated by an expert lab technician. At a subsequent appointment, your doctor will remove the temporary inlay and replace it with the final restoration.

Once completed, your tooth is free of decay and restored to its natural strength and function.

Sometimes teeth can develop cracks. Cracks can come from trauma or large fillings that over time weaken the rest of the tooth.
A cracked tooth may or may not be sensitive to hot and cold, or be painful when biting or chewing. If cracks in the teeth are not treated, serious consequences for your oral health can happen.

Even small cracks can allow bacteria into the tooth, causing decay or infection and leading to further destruction.
Cracks that progress too far can result in entire sections of the tooth breaking off, and in some cases, loss of the entire tooth.
