Children friendly dentist in Amsterdam

Lassus Tandartsen is a dental practice that focuses on the entire family. Children are therefore very welcome in our practice. Most cavities emerge between the age of 4 and 21 years old. As a result of this, we focus extra time and attention to this age group.

The first visit to a dentist

We’re of the opinion that children are never too young for their first visit to the dentists. We recommend bringing your child with you to the dentist from the age of two years old. The first visit with your child is an introduction where they can get used to the dental practice environment and the dentist. As your child see that you’re not afraid of visiting the dentists, this will make them feel comfortable a lot quicker. If your child is clearly at ease with us, then we’ll invite them to sit in the dental chair. It’s also possible that the dentist will look in your child’s mouth for the first time to count the number of teeth and molars.

Checkups

As soon as your child is used to the dentist, then checkup can take place. During the checkup, we’ll investigate the general health from the teeth of your child and will count the number of teeth and molar. Afterwards, we’ll provide tips for cleaning and nutrition advice. The checkups of your child take place during your own periodic dental appointments.

Cavity treatment by children friendly dentists

In the event that during a checkup the dentist sees that there are cavities in any of the teeth of your son or daughter, then they’ll handle this carefully and thoughtfully. The dentist will take the time to discuss this in a playful manner with your child. We’ll be open, honest and will communicate with your child in an understandable manner.

Child teeth development

Children start losing baby teeth roughly around the age of 5 or 6 years old. Permanent (or adult) molars, emerge behind your child’s existing teeth. The emergence of the first permanent molars often goes unnoticed, as these appear in the back of the mouth and do not lead to the loss of milk teeth.

The exchanging of the rest of the teeth and molars will not go by unnoticed. Premolars, canines, and incisors will erupt into the gaps left by primary teeth that have fallen out. This process is usually completed by the age of 13. After this, at around the age of 14 2 large molars will erupt, and it’s also possible that between the ages of 18 to 24 that the third set of molars (wisdom teeth) can erupt.

Prevention

In order to keep your child’s teeth healthy, prevention and good dental hygiene are important. Teeth brushing and healthy nutritional habits play an important role in this. At our dental practice we provide the following preventative treatments:

Dental sealants

Most cavities appear at the moment that the molars have fully erupted. This is due to newly erupted molars often containing deep grooves. It’s easy for food particles and bacteria to sit within the grooves. Even good brushing of teeth is sometimes not enough, this is because the grooves are so narrow and deep that it’s not possible for a toothbrush to effectively remove everything.

To prevent cavities it’s possible for the dentist to seal the molars. During this treatment, the grooves are covered with a thin layer of synthetic resin or fluoride holding cement.

Fluoride

Fluoride makes teeth and molars stronger. For health reasons, fluoride can only be used in small concentrations. The Ivory Cross gives the following advice for the use of the fluoride by children:

0 to 1 years old

As the first tooth erupts: Clean once per day with children’s toothpaste that contains fluoride

2-4 years old

Clean twice a day with children’s toothpaste that contains fluoride

5 years and older

Clean twice a day with fluoride-based toothpaste for adults

In the event that your child has multiple cavities or dental caries, the dentist may advise additional fluoride use or a fluoride treatment.

Braces

Our dentist for orthodontics can correct children’s teeth that are too far forward or crooked by the placing of braces. For health reasons, it can be important for children to wear braces. A mouth with straight teeth makes it possible to bite, chew, talk and laugh well. The position of some teeth can lead to damage of the gums, dental asymmetry in the face and malformed jaws or an overbite.

Lassus Tandartsen is committed to providing exceptional dental services for all the family. We pride ourselves on having the most children friendly dentists in Amsterdam.
