Peri-implant mucositis is a condition characterized by the inflammation of soft tissue around a dental implant. It is an early form of peri-implant disease that has not progressed to the point of tissue or bone loss at the implant site.
Symptoms of peri-implant mucositis can vary in type and severity, and is comparable to gingivitis. Common symptoms include redness and inflammation of the gum tissue surrounding the implant, and in some cases the area may experience tenderness and slight bleeding when being probed or while brushing.
The most common cause of peri-implant mucositis is plaque buildup at the implant site, which harbors toxin-emitting bacteria that result in irritation of the surrounding gum tissue. There are other possible causes that may apply depending on your situation.
If left untreated, the infection can progress to result in bone loss around the implant- a condition called peri-implantitis. Once it reaches this point it becomes much more difficult to treat, and could lead to loss of the implant altogether.
If addressed early enough, there are treatment options available to halt the progression of peri-implant mucositis and control its effects. It is important to work closely with a doctor experienced in treating this condition to determine the best options with the highest likelihood of success.

Gingivitis is an inflammatory condition of the gum tissue caused by the buildup of bacteria on the teeth. It is an early form of gum disease that has not progressed to the point of tissue or bone loss.

When plaque is allowed to remain on the teeth, the bacteria within it begins to cause redness, irritation, and swelling of the gum tissue. Since gingivitis rarely causes pain, most patients do not even know when they have it. Additional symptoms can also include sensitivity and tenderness of the gum tissue, and slight bleeding when brushing, flossing, or probing during an examination. You may notice your toothbrush or floss having a slight pinkish tone to them after use. If left untreated Gingivitis will progress and further complications can arise. It is important to consult with your dentist on the best course of action to halt the disease progression.

Tissue grafting can address receding gums and help prevent bone loss that would jeopardize your teeth. Grafting can also improve the look of your smile.

This procedure involves taking gum tissue from another area of the mouth and placing it in the area of recession. The area is sutured and given time to heal. Your doctor will let you know how long this will take. When fully recovered, your gums will be returned to a healthy level that protects the underlying area from additional damage.

Without regular dental cleanings, harmful bacteria and hard deposits called calculus build up on your teeth above and below your gums, releasing harmful toxins that can lead to gingivitis- inflamed and bleeding gums.

This buildup occurs in areas that cannot be reached by brushing, flossing, or even regular dental cleaning. Your dentist may recommend a procedure called debridement to remove these deposits from your teeth.

Debridement is usually performed with an ultrasonic cleaner, which uses high-frequency vibration to separate the calculus from the tooth.
In many cases, this can bring your gums back to health. Your doctor can help you determine the best next steps in your treatment. If these symptoms are not treated, they may lead to periodontitis and bone loss, requiring more advanced procedures to remedy.

Tissue grafting can be done to address receding gums, restoring the tissue to a more appropriate level and halt the recession process.

This procedure involves taking gum tissue from another area of the mouth and placing it on the area of recession. The area is sutured and given time to heal- your doctor will let you know the time needed. Once completed, tissue grafting returns your gums to a healthy level, protecting the surfaces of the roots and bone.

Often, gum disease can exist in an individual with little to no apparent symptoms. Gums that appear healthy and pink at initial glance can have harmful buildup below the gumline that can affect one’s oral health. This buildup, called calculus, is an accumulation of hardened plaque and toxin emitting bacteria. Over time it can can cause tissue loss around the tooth, and even loss of the tooth itself.

To help detect signs of gum disease, an instrument called a periodontal probe is used. It has indicators on it to help measure the depth of the tissue surrounding the tooth; with notches measured in millimeters. The probe is placed in between the tooth and gums and measures the depth of what is called the periodontal pocket- the space between your teeth and the surrounding gums and bone. An easy indicator of trouble is discovery of deep periodontal pockets, typically deeper than 3 mm, which indicate inflamed gums, or possibly erosion of the bone surrounding the tooth. Gingival probing is a critical part of the dental examination to ensure that your teeth and gums are maintained at optimum health.

Gingival recession is a progressive dental condition where the gums begin to pull away from the teeth, exposing more of the teeth and potentially the roots as well. It develops slowly over time, so many people do not notice until it is identified by a dental professional. There are a variety of factors that can cause gingival recession.

A common cause of this is gingivitis, characterized by the buildup of hard calculus and bacterial deposits beneath the gumline that slowly detach and erode gum tissue. Additionally, improper tooth brushing and flossing can contribute to the recession. Too much force being applied and incorrect technique can wear the gum tissue away, potentially exposing the roots and making the teeth susceptible to damage. Genetics and hormonal changes can also add to your risk.

It is important to address issues of gingival recession early to minimize the damage it can cause to your teeth and gums. Once the roots are exposed the damage to the underlying structure accelerates. If left untreated this condition could cause the loss of the affected teeth. Your doctor will work with you to develop a treatment plan that best suits you unique needs.

To improve appearance, sometimes teeth require exposing more tooth material than is available below the gumline. In these situations, your doctor may recommend a procedure called crown lengthening, in which the surrounding tissue is altered to expose additional healthy tooth material.

This procedure involves your doctor accessing the area below the gumline and increasing the amount of tooth material exposed, usually by modifying the surrounding bone and tissue, effectively lengthening the tooth. Next, the area is sutured and allowed to heal, your doctor will let you know when the area is fully recovered. Once completed, the area is now restored to optimal appearance.

When periodontitis has resulted in bone loss, it can form deep, uneven pockets around the teeth, your doctor may recommend a procedure called Osseous Surgery to reduce the depth of these pockets and help bring the area back to health. These deep pockets accumulate harmful bacteria that can’t be reached by normal cleaning, preventing the gums from ever healing on their own.

To reduce these pockets, first your doctor will expose the area and use a hand scaler to remove the hardened deposits, called calculus, that surround the teeth and root surface. The bone surrounding the tooth is reshaped and smoothened to recreate a favorable bony architecture.
Next, the area is sutured and allowed to heal, your doctor will let you know when the area is fully recovered. Once complete, the pockets surrounding your teeth will be reduced creating an environment where your mouth has a better chance of recovering from the damage caused by periodontitis.
